Rebels voted Reformer Team of the Spring | The Brattleboro Reformer

BRATTLEBORO — The Leland & Gray varsity softball team received 151 votes to earn Brattleboro Reformer Team of the Spring honors.

The Rebels made it all the way to the Division 3 championship game in Poultney, where they lost to undefeated Oxbow. It was the third time in five years that coach Tammy Claussen has guided them there.

“To get here is pretty special. I’m proud of the effort from my players,” said Claussen following an 11-2 loss to the Olympians.

After going 13-3 during the regular season and being seeded second in the state tournament, Leland & Gray got three hits each from Emma Lane and Jessica Madore during a 7-1 victory over Windsor in a quarterfinal. The Townshend team then battled back from a four-run deficit to edge Green Mountain 8-7 in a semifinal, thanks to home runs by Erin Cutts and Olivia Brown that were followed by Jessalyn Stockwell’s walk-off single to deep left field.

Stockwell led the Rebels in home runs (4) and runs batted in (23), while Rachel Borgesen was second on the team with 20 RBI and Madore was third on the team with 20 total hits. Brown went 15-4 inside the circle, finishing with 102 strikeouts.

Coach Claussen’s Reformer Team of the Spring prize is two free passes to Brattleboro Bowl for Cosmic Bowling, which takes place on Friday and Saturday evenings from 9-11.
